The ball is made of brass and then nickel-plated which gives the glossy finish.  A complete push button normally consists of four parts (Calott, Spring, Bullet and Nit). With a tool, Calotten is merged with Fjädern and Kulan with Niten. The ball can also be fastened directly with screws or nails. Just make sure the head is large enough so it disappears into the ball.
