Care advice for artificial leather
PU
The artificial leather material PU consists of a textile base that is dyed and coated with a layer of polyurethane. PU is an extremely flexible material designed for demanding use—offering durability, elasticity, heat resistance, scratch resistance, shape retention, and high breathability.
PU leather is a leather-like material that is either fully artificial or semi-artificial. Thanks to its moldability, it is well-suited for various patterns and prints.
- Fully artificial PU refers to a type of plastic (polyurethane) that contains no animal products.
- Semi-artificial PU consists of animal hide (leather) bonded with polyurethane, commonly referred to as “bycast leather,” “bonded leather,” or “split leather.”
PU is often used as a substitute for genuine leather, as it can both look and feel real while also “aging” similarly. Under normal use, polyurethane does not crack, break, or get damaged by sunlight. Additionally, PU is easier to clean and maintain than genuine leather.
PVC
The artificial leather material PVC is made from two synthetic components: polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and a plasticizer based on phthalic acid. The fabric fibers consist of strong polyester fibers, which, when combined with polyvinyl chloride and phthalic acid, form multiple layers beneath the coating. This process creates a vinyl surface that is fused onto the polyester fibers, resulting in a sealed and nearly waterproof material that is both durable and stretchable.
PVC is an extremely durable material, waterproof, and resistant to various weather conditions. It is generally stiffer and firmer compared to PU. Due to its resilience, PVC is commonly used in demanding environments such as healthcare, automotive upholstery, industrial equipment, and the marine sector.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS
- Clean with a damp, soft cloth (preferably microfiber or cotton) together with a suitable cleaning agent designed for artificial leather (PVC/PU). Alternatively, use lukewarm water and a mild soap solution.
- Wipe dry with a clean, dry, and soft cloth.
- Avoid strong cleaning agents as much as possible. If necessary, rinse thoroughly with plenty of cold water—never hot water.
- Do not use cleaning products intended for natural leather.
Tip! Artificial leather can develop or retain strong odors such as cigarette smoke, sweat, or cooking smells. To remove odors, sprinkle baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) over the material and place it in a sealed plastic bag for 24 hours. Afterward, brush off the powder and wipe the surface with a soft, damp cloth using plain water. Repeat if the odor persists.
IMPORTANT TO NOTE
- Never place the material on a damp surface.
- Protect the material from hot objects and strong solvents.
- Avoid highly corrosive liquids such as coffee, wine, and blood—these should be wiped away immediately. (bör omedelbart torkas bort)
- To extend the lifespan of all upholstery materials, regular maintenance and care are essential.
